1941-2022
The” Elie Wiesel” National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania and the Iași City Hall will launch on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, the cultural project “The Pogrom in Iași. The MEMORY of places” (www.iasi1941.com). The launch will take place at 17:00, in the “Vasile Pogor” Council Hall of the Iași City Hall.
The city with the oldest Jewish community in Romania and the largest in the interwar period, Iasi was also the place where, at the end of June 1941, the history of Romania experienced an episode of a great tragedy that meant thousands of lives destroyed, thousands of families destroyed, over 13,000 victims, “guilty” of being of Jewish ethnicity. The project “The Pogrom in Iași. The MEMORY of places” continues the approach that encourages the remembrance and discovery of life stories witnessed by the same city that today is part of our reality.
Through photographs, testimonies, and historical information, the project helps us realize that the streets we walk through and the buildings we often look at indifferently bear the imprint of life stories, the burden of tragedies generated by hatred. The digital platform www.iasi1941.com makes a foray into the past of the city at the end of June 1941, discovering it from a different perspective, with dark sides and, in some places, with fragments of hope and trust in people.
Join us for a remembrance tour that encourages discovery!
