Imagini din trecut. Holocaustul în Gorj
Images of the Past. The Holocaust in Gorj

For the Jews of Southern Bukovina and Moldova (the villages between the Siret and Prut rivers), Târgu Jiu was the place where, from June 1941 until the fall of 1941, they endured inhumane living and working conditions. For many of them, Târgu Jiu was followed by an equally arduous journey. Vapniarca, Râbnița, Grosulovo—ordinary names to us— they are symbols of the pain, cold, hunger, and disease endured by the Jews deported from the Târgu Jiu camp to Transnistria.

Transnistria is also where the Roma from Gorj County were deported and lived in conditions that are hard to put into words.

Their illustrated life stories show us a different side of history; a history that tells us what happens when we forget that those around us are human beings and forget to be human ourselves.
